A home that still feels oven-hot in late afternoon may need more than another fan or a larger AC unit. Check the roof space, ceiling radiation, sun-facing glass, and air path before choosing roof ventilation or insulation.
Picture a single-storey Bali home with a metal roof. By late afternoon, the living room still holds heat even with the doors open and a fan running. The useful decision is not to choose a roof turbine or a bigger AC unit immediately. First, separate heat held above the ceiling from heat entering through sun-facing glass.
The hot-humid setting matters. Bali’s provincial development plan, drawing on 2024 station data, records average temperatures of about 28°C and average humidity of about 79% at Ngurah Rai and Denpasar. A sun-heated roof does more than warm the air below it. Its underside can radiate heat toward cooler attic and ceiling surfaces. A ceiling that feels warm to the touch, or a room directly below the roof that stays hot longest, is a reason to inspect the roof and ceiling assembly rather than blaming windows alone. If the heat is strongest beside a large window, glazed door, or skylight at a particular time of day, start there as well. A roof ventilator is not a stand-alone hole. Effective attic ventilation needs exhaust near the roof peak and replacement air entering lower down at the eaves, creating a usable path through the roof space. Before comparing products, note when the room becomes hot, which room is affected, the roof covering, the ceiling condition, and whether there is safe access to inspect the roof space. Those observations are more useful than selecting a turbine solely by its visible diameter.
Where a roof space is very hot and lacks a planned intake-and-exhaust route, roof ventilation can be one part of the response. It mainly addresses hot air in the roof space, though; it does not remove all radiant heat travelling from the roof toward the ceiling. If the ceiling itself is the main source of discomfort, insulation or a reflective layer suited to the roof assembly may need to be considered alongside ventilation.
Where solar gain through glazing is the stronger issue, shade and opening management deserve priority. A fan can improve the air movement felt by a person, but that is a different job from managing heat above the ceiling.
