In many Bali homes, the upstairs bedroom starts to feel heavy after lunch. The ceiling is warm, the door seems to hold back a pocket of heat, and the air conditioner feels as if it is doing more work than it should. People often call it hot air, but the cause is rarely just one thing.
This article is for the owner of a two-storey home with a bedroom directly below a metal roof—spandek, zinc, galvalume, or zincalume—who needs to decide the first sensible step: improve roof-space ventilation, add insulation, adjust openings, or increase mechanical cooling.
Bali gives this type of room a difficult starting point. The Bali provincial RPJMD document, summarising BPS/BMKG data, records average temperatures around 28°C and average humidity close to 80% in 2024. A metal roof exposed to the sun all day does more than warm the air in the roof space. A hot roof surface can also radiate heat toward cooler surfaces below it, including the ceiling area. The U.S. Department of Energy explains this roof-radiation issue in its guide toradiant barriers.
That is why the room can feel as if it is storing heat. During the day, the area below the roof receives heat from above. In the evening, outdoor air may start to feel cooler, but the ceiling zone and roof space may still be releasing heat collected earlier. The signs are practical: the upper part of the wall feels warm, the upstairs room is hotter than the lower floor, and opening the bedroom door simply pushes the warm air into the corridor.
With spandek or galvalume roofs, the problem can feel worse when there is no clear air path through the roof space. A small vent on one side of the house may not help much if replacement air cannot enter from below, or if hot air has no proper high-level exit above the ceiling.
Before choosing a solution, separate three symptoms. First, roof heat: the ceiling feels warm, especially in the room directly below the roof plane. Second, trapped air: the room feels stuffy even after the window has been opened for a while, and the air near the ceiling feels warmer. Third, humidity: bedsheets feel slow to dry, a musty smell appears, or the room feels sticky even when the temperature is not extreme.
Ventilation helps move air and remove heat, but in hot-humid climates it does not always make a room feel cool. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that ventilation in hot or humid conditions needs care because outdoor air can also bring moisture. The reference is its guide toventilation.
That distinction matters. If the main issue is heat trapped under the roof, roof ventilation and insulation deserve inspection. If the main issue is humidity, simply adding openings may leave the room uncomfortable. If the problem is mixed, the response should be staged rather than solved by one device.
Start with timing. If the bedroom is worst between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and the ceiling is also warm, the roof should be inspected. If the room is still stuffy in the morning, check for trapped humidity, musty odour, or windows that do not create cross-airflow.
Then look at the room position. A corner room upstairs often receives more heat from both walls and the roof. A middle room with a low ceiling can feel stagnant because warm air collects near the top. If there is ceiling access, check whether the roof space has low-level air intake near the eaves and high-level exhaust near the roof peak.
The Home Ventilating Institute explains that effective attic or roof-space ventilation needs air to leave near the roof peak while replacement air enters from the lower roof edge. In plain terms, a roof ventilator is not a magic opening. If there is not enough air entering from below, if the pathway is blocked, or if the exhaust position is poorly chosen, hot-air removal can be weak. On metal roofs, flashing and installation details also matter so a heat fix does not become a leak problem.

If the roof plane receives strong sun, insulation or a radiant-barrier strategy may be relevant because the issue is not only hot air; it is also radiant heat from the roof surface. If the room has windows on one side only, improving openings or creating a clearer cross-airflow path may also need attention.
Air conditioning may still be necessary, especially for a bedroom where temperature and humidity need tighter control. But increasing AC capacity without reducing heat load from the roof often leaves the root cause untouched. A more orderly sequence is: identify the heat source, confirm the roof-space air path, check insulation, then assess the room’s cooling requirement.
For a two-storey Bali home with a bedroom below a metal roof, the first decision is not “which product can be installed fastest”. It is “where is the heat coming from”. If the ceiling is hot and the roof space is closed, prioritise an inspection of roof ventilation and the intake-exhaust path. This approach takes a little more care at the start, but it is usually more sensible than guessing. One house may only need a better roof-air pathway. Another may need a combination of ventilation, insulation, shading, and more controlled mechanical cooling.
